Las Vegas, and It's Run of Terror
By Olivia Appleton -- 10/17/17

On October 1st, 2017, a great tragedy occurred in Las Vegas, Nevada, during the last performance of the Route 91 Harvest festival. There was an estimated 22,000 people there spread on a 15-acre lot. This lot was surrounded by a fence that kept people from getting in and out.

When the first shots were fired country singer Jason Aldean was performing. These shots were fired by a man named Stephan Paddock, who had smashed two outside windows at the Mandalay Bay resort and casino. He was on the 32nd floor in a two bedroom suite. The Mandalay Bay resort and casino was located at least 400 yards away from the lot.

Around 10:20 pm, the officers on the scene were calling for medical assistance and searching for the gunman. After almost an hour, the police located the guns that Paddock had used. Soon after,

 Paddock was found and arrested.

Paddock killed at least 58 people and injured nearly 500 more. This shooting was one of the deadliest shootings in modern American history. The list of victims of the attack is too long to list. Many were hurt, both physically and emotionally, and the country will continue to heal from this horrific event. â€‹

Those impacted by these horrific events have come together to support each other. Makeshift monuments to those lost have sprung up across the city, drawing mourning crowds. Millions of dollars in donations have been sent, including a million dollar donation from President Trump, to those affected and those working in relief efforts. In this time of great tragedy, the support from millions of people across the nation is a show of how we can get through anything if we stand together. We as a people can do anything, overcome anything, if we stick together.

Political Hypocrisy

By Jessica Victor News Section Editor -- 10/17/17

A local scandal made national news when pro-life Republican senator Tim Murphy announced that he would resign his eighth-term position in the House of Representatives. This announcement came after Murphy allegedly asked his mistress to seek an abortion, and his hypocrisy was soon brought to the attention of the media.

Murphy is an announced supporter of pro-life, and is even part of the House Pro-Life Caucus. Around a week ago, Murphy helped sponsor a Republican bill that bans most abortions after 20 weeks of fetal development. A resident of Upper St. Clair, Murphy serves the 18th district of Pennsylvania, which includes Greene, Washington, and Westmoreland counties. He was originally elected to the House in 2002. As it turns out, Murphy’s girlfriend wasn’t even pregnant.  Sadly, this scandal has made the public question who you can and can’t trust in politics.

New York Man Convicted of New Jersey Bombing

By Olivia Appleton

On Monday, Ahmad Khan Rahimi was finally convicted of planting two pressure-cooker bombs in Chelsea, New York back on September 17th, 2016. Rahimi was found guilty of all charges against him, including bombing a public place. The verdict came after a two week trial. There were massive amounts of evidence against Rahimi, such as his DNA had been found on the bombs and dozens of videos showed his movements as he placed the bombs. Out of the two bombs that were planted, only one actually went off. That bomb injured at least 30 people. Federal prosecutors said it was a miracle nobody was killed. Ahmad Khan Rahimi was then sentenced to life in prison, but his defense assures that they will appeal.

Trump Announces Release of Kennedy Files
By Jessica Victor - News Section Editor

President Trump recently announced that he will make public the remainder of the classified documents from the assassination of President Kennedy in 1963. This announcement is not simply a random act. Under a law passed in 1992, the president is to release all files of the investigation to the public by October 26th, 2017, unless the matter threatens national security. Most of the files have already been released (about 88%) and others have been released with restrictions. Many believe that the sudden releasing of the remainder of the files will only spark and add to conspiracy theories. On the other hand, the withholding of such documents could also fuel theories of government involvement of the assassination. Either way, the president's decision to release these files will certainly prompt both new and old conspiracies.
